[Hong Kong] Yan Toh Heen 欣圖軒 - 2 Michelin Star Dim Sum at Intercontinental

Rating: ❤❤❤❤❤

Fabulous dim sum at the 2 Michelin Star Yan Toh Heen in the InterContinental Hotel with beautiful views of the Victoria Harbor! Even though the surrounding area is under going construction at the moment, the views from the restaurants are not affected at all so you can still see the Wan Chai Convention Center through the windows. We actually received a windfall of 2 dining certificates for InterCon that was about to expire from our family so we decided to make a trip Yan Toh Heen since that is a restaurant I've always wanted to try in that hotel for its exquisite dim sum and Chinese food. The service from the start was prompt and helpful as I had made the reservations online through the hotel website and received a confirmation email from the staff asking if we were celebrating anything and if we wanted to order any special items in advance. I asked to be seated by the window (highly recommended!) and was told to come at 12 noon when they open to secure those seats.

The first thing I noticed after sitting down were the decadent utensils and charger plate which all utilized some elements of real jade while the crispy honeyed walnut appetizer was simply irresistible to eat!

After we placed our orders, 6 types of sauces were brought out to our table from hot sauce, sweet sauce, soy sauce and vinegar. If you like hot sauce, then you must try the yellow one which is made from jalapeno as it was super spicy! The oyster sauce in particular was of superior quality as it was very flavorful and much better than the usual ones you'd buy in the supermarkets.

Steamed Garoupa and Pork Dumplings with Gold Leaf | 金箔星斑金魚餃 ($72/2pc) - these goldfish dumplings were super cute and not only did they look good, they also tasted fresh and flavorful as the ingredients used were of high quality!

Yan Toh Heen Superior Dumplings | 極品三式海鮮餃 ($168):
Steamed Scallop with Black Truffles and Vegetables Dumpling
Steamed Lobster Dumpling with Bird’s Nest and Gold Leaf
Steamed King Crab Leg Dumpling with Green Vegetables

More exquisite dumplings made with delicate ingredients and the flavors were light so as not to overwhelm the natural flavors of the seafood.

Braised Whole Abalone and Seafood on a Crispy Taro Net | 原隻鮑魚海鮮脆芋盒 ($110) - this was quite possibly the best taro dumpling I have ever eaten as the filling inside was not only taro but also mixed in with prawns as well for additional layer of flavors. The abalone on top was lovely as well but not necessary either as it was separate from the taro dumpling and didn't add much to it.

Golden Stuffed Crab Shell with Crabmeat | 脆釀鮮蟹蓋 ($230) - we had to wait quite a while for this to come and the price seemed steep at first, but made sense after discovering that the entire crab shell had been stuffed with crab meat and other seafood as well! The flavor tasted purely of crab but can be rather light and one dimensional as well so perhaps adding some onions or shallots would have been better.

Crispy Lung Kong Chicken | 脆皮龍崗雞 ($270/half | $540/whole) - the skin was super crispy and you can choose to dip the meat into lemon juice or salt which had been completely and conveniently deboned already. The chicken could have been juicier and not the best crispy chicken that I've had but certainly of very solid quality.

Basil Dragon Pearl served with Ginger Ice Cream | 泰國龍眼珍珠伴薑味雪糕 ($120) - I was debating between this dessert and the mango cream with sago and pomelo but ultimately decided to go for this as this was more unique. Even though I'm not a big fan of ginger in general, the ginger ice cream was surprisingly tasty and balanced the sweet milk custard underneath very well!

Lastly, we were given a complimentary cheesecake dessert for our anniversary celebration!

Verdict - although the food at Yan Toh Heen can be pricey, you certainly get what you pay for with the high quality of ingredients used in the well-made dim sum with a gorgeous harbor view to match!
