[Hong Kong] Moi Moi by Luke Nguyen - Wagyu Beef Pho

Rating: ❤❤❤1/2

Since I grew up eating Vietnamese pho in San Francisco, I'm always down for trying new pho restaurants in Hong Kong and the newly opened Moi Moi caught my eye with its Wagyu Beef Pho! The executive chef is Luke Nguyen who is apparently a celebrity chef from Australia and offers modern Vietnamese cuisine with organic and sustainable produce. It took over the space formerly occupied by Viet Kitchen and renovated with teal and red retro furnishings that made it look like it could be from old Saigon. The Wagyu beef pho is only offered at lunch as part of a set menu with starter, main and drink for $168 so I came here with a friend to check it out one weekend.

For starters, we chose the Green Mango Salad with fresh Australian Spinner crab, Vietnamese mint, rambutan and crispy shallot and Soft Rice Paper Rolls filled with tiger prawns, Kurobuta pork and perilla to share. Both were tasty while the portions were generous as well.

For mains you can choose Wagyu Beef Pho, Salmon Pho, Vermicelli Noodle Bowl, Bahn Mi and Slow Roasted Chicken. We both decided to try the Wagyu Beef Pho with signature 18 hour pho broth with wagyu beef and rice noodles topped with Asian basil, saw-tooth coriander, beansprouts and chili. The broth had potential as it was flavorful with a tad of spice but sadly wasn't hot enough (I thought it may be because I was taking pictures but my friend who started eating right away thought so too). I was also surprised at how little raw beef there was while the other cooked meat was soft but really fatty. The rice noodles felt a bit overcooked and soggy as well. For now, Bun Cha is still my favorite place for pho in Hong Kong!

Verdict - it may not be the best place for pho but perhaps the offerings at night will be better. The portions here were quite big actually so it'd be nice to have the option of ordering just a pho instead the lunch set in the future as I got really full. Service still needs some work as I was told that I needed to make a reservation via Facebook but when I called, the person at the other end of the line told me that they don't take reservations but when I arrived at the restaurant, the receptionist asked me if I had a reservation. Hmmm...
