[Tokyo] Kotaro - Top Rated Izakaya in Shibuya

What an amazing night at the top rated izakaya Kotaro in Shibuya! We've heard a lot of good things about this place from our foodie friends and were glad that we finally got to pay a visit. Reservations are a must and can be hard to come by due to limited seats in the small restaurant - there's just a L-shaped counter and a few small tables. A la carte is available (the menu is handwritten by the chef) but for our first time, we had the omakase which included signatures like the potato salad topped with a smoked soft-boiled egg, menchi-katsu (ground pork meat cutlet), and the chef’s handmade udon noodles served with a delicious duck broth. Other highlights included the baked gratin with crab tomalley and leek, deep-fried lily bulbs, and the sake selection!

We started our meal with a refreshing cold appetizer and sashimi of the day with salmon, sawara and tachiuo.


This is the signature Potato Salad with smoked soft-boiled egg and mustard sauce. We liked that the salad had texture with lumps of potatoes here and there.

The Chilled Tofu with dried baby sardines, green onions, and bonito flakes was our least favorite dish though as the raw green onions were way too spicy to be enjoyable to eat.

The Gratin with Crab Tomalley and Shimonita Leek was easily a favorite with its rich and gratifying flavors.


The Deep-fried Lily Bulbs was another fantastic dish as they were fried perfectly - it was almost like eating thick-cut potato chips.

Finally our omakase ended with the chef's handmade udon served chill with a flavorful duck broth!
