[India: Mumbai] Papa's Bombay

Rating: 5/5

Follow me to Papa's in Mumbai - a 12 seater counter restaurant by Chef Hussain Shahzad which has become one of the hottest tables in town! Named after the chef’s mentor who is fondly referred to as Papaji, the restaurant is all about breaking the rules as the chef blends traditional Indian flavors with innovative twists. Complementing the food is the amazing hospitality from general manager Madhusudhan Kashyap who keeps the energy up with drinks, magic tricks and a sick playlist ranging from Biggie to Queen. The meal feels like one big dinner party with naturally good vibes where everyone becomes friends at the end of the night.

Located in the attic of a former bakery in the hip neighborhood of Bandra, the dining experience started at the bar with welcome bites and cocktails. The Papa’s Hut - a savory cocktail served with a mini pizza in a box - came highly recommended and this whimsical creation ended up setting the tone for the rest of the night. From a “Bugs Bunny” dish with rabbit & red ants to a kakigori salad of watermelon & feta, the playful tasting menu delivered highlights after highlights. I can’t recommend this restaurant enough even though this is the first time I’m visiting India, and Papa’s has certainly set the bar high. Expect the unexpected when dining here and who knows - maybe you will even come across a magic chihuahua.
