[China: Shanghai] 東临观海·和兴1913
Rating: 4.5/5
Back in Shanghai for hairy crab and my first dinner was at the impressive 東临观海·和兴1913 near the Shanghai Expo. The restaurant primarily serves Taizhou cuisine but as one of the founders is from Sichuan, some of the dishes have Sichuan influences as well. Opened 4 years ago, the restaurant is housed in a historic building built in 1913 with more than 20 private dining rooms and views of the Huangpu River. We started our meal with a yellow fish tofu in chicken soup - a marriage of ingredients from the mountains and sea. The appetizer platter featured 4 traditional Taizhou flavor profiles with winter melon, pig trotter terrine, marinated raw shrimp, and bottarga. My absolute favorites were the silky pomfret cooked in a red peppercorn chicken essence and the appetizing local octopus in a vinegar-pepper soup - both original dishes created by the restaurant. Other highlights included the signature cuttlefish cooked in its own ink, chilled soft-roe crab that is now in its 86th version, and the braised yellow cow brisket with a super delicious radish.
