炊豕店 - Taiwanese Pork Chop

Rating:

I'd walked by this place before after eating at Via Tokyo and was instantly intrigued by the retro interior design! I knew that I had to come back and eat here then! It turns out that they offer Taiwanese food with a main focus on pork. The menu was quite simple and you fill out a form to place your order. There are 6 main dishes like pork chop and pork belly with which you can order side dishes like eggs, your choice of rice/noodle, and snacks on the side like chicken wings. Each dish comes with a free drink as well and the choices were surprisingly abundant ranging from soda to juice to tea. I decided to go for the famous dish here - the pork chop with rice!

After handing in my order form, I turned my attention to the decor. The shop was actually quite tiny with only 4 tables with 4 seats each. There were many details to pay attention to - from the old tile floors to the metal school chairs. I love all the little details like the mail box and the old-school fan - everything just came together to provide a cute dining atmosphere! Kinda felt like I was eating in a G.O.D store too.
Love the mailbox!

and the fan...
The writing on the wall here explains the meaning behind their shop name which means to 'cook' and 'pig'. Pretty self explanatory there.

Love the color choice of the wall!
Pork Chop with Rice ($43) - after feasting with my eyes, my actual food came rather quickly and the portions were huge! The pork chop was very crispy on the surface while the meat inside was tender and fatty. Unfortunately the pork was just not marinated enough so it ended up being a bit bland. Ideally, the meat should be slightly sweet from the marinade. The pork chop was not bad but not the best that I've had.

On the other hand, as I dug deeper into my bowl, I found some marinated pork belly and sauce glazed over the rice. The pork belly turned out to be pretty good as the light flavors and fatty texture served as great condiments for the rice. If only the pork chop delivered, then this would have been one satisfying rice bowl.
Pork belly that came with the rice
Verdict - the food here was just alright but the value for money was high though as they are only charging $43 for the huge portion as well as a free drink! The pork chop was slightly disappointing but I think the shop is still worth a visit once - if not for the food then for your eyes.
