[Hong Kong] Le Pan - Well Worth The Trek to Kowloon Bay

Rating: ❤❤❤❤ (4/5)

In spite of its location in Kowloon Bay, Le Pan is well worth the trek if you are looking for a new French fine dining restaurant to check out in Hong Kong! With Singaporean Chef Edward Voon at the helm, the restaurant delivers high quality modern French cuisine with an opulent setting and wine list to match. Lunch sets start from HK$368 while dinner tasting menus start from HK$1280 - not exactly cheap but comparable to other fine dining restaurants in Central and Tsim Sha Tsui.

We were impressed from the start with its grand entrance and automatic doors which opens into a grand foyer. With an abundant amount of natural light during the day time, the restaurant looked sleek and elegant with its all white decor, and for those seeking a more intimate setting, four private dining rooms are available in addition to a main dining room and a chef's table in the kitchen.

We started off our meal with a series of amuse bouche and appetizers including a gazpacho bonbon, Parmesan marshmallow, clams with Thai sauce, escargot bourguignon and Croque Monsieur.

The Kaluga Queen Caviar with botan shrimps, sea urchin and crustacean jelly was gorgeous with delightful flavors to match.

The Truffle Egg Royale reminded me of Andre's Foie Gras Royale with Black Truffle and while it could have been even richer, the umami flavors here were so gratifying to taste.

The Atlantic Hake with oyster grains and watercress emulsion was cooked to perfection but I wasn't sure the flavors of the oyster grains went well with the fish.

The Brittany Blue Lobster with Jerusalem artichoke and aromatic beurre blanc was impressive and one of the best lobster dish I've had in Hong Kong!

The French Yellow Chicken with pigeon leg confit, aged comte and foie gras emulsion was executed nicely - for each of the three pieces - but I felt there was a bit too much going on here with the rich and dominating flavors of the cheese and foie gras clashing together.

The Le Jardin with raspberry, pistachio and cocoa ice cream was a lovely and refreshing dessert to end the meal like a midsummer's night dream.

Petit Fours and coffee to end the meal.

Admittedly its location will be a challenge to overcome given most Hong Kongers put convenience above all things but with three other restaurants in the same building, perhaps it can draw a following to the area especially for those seeking for quality food.
