School Food | Hong Kong

Rating: ❤❤❤1/2

School Food is a Korean fusion restaurant that has been quite popular for a while and I've been wanting to try it out but the long lines kept me away. Finally, I happened to be around Times Square at an off hour so stopped by to try my luck, and viola! - no lines. The restaurant was easy to spot with its bright neon signs while the colorful decor does kind of remind me of a school cafeteria.

The restaurant looked small from the front but there were actually more seats in the back so it was decently sized. The restaurant still filled up fairly quickly though while I was eating with a big crowd lining in front. The menu had an array of appetizers and mains to choose from but I already knew what I wanted to try from past reviews.
Squid Ink Mari ($68) - this was one of the more popular dishes here and I can see why! The squid was mildly sweet while the texture was just right as it was easy to chew. The mari roll was light and delicious to eat. It also came with a white sauce drizzled off to the side that made the mari even more appetizing to eat. [5/5]

Hot Carbonara Topokki ($75) - I love topokki so I was intrigued with this dish's fusion with carbonara. The dish was pretty spicy but it was strangely sweet at the same time. I did taste the carbonara flavor but it was simply way too sweet for a savory dish. They do have a regular carbonara topokki without the spicy sauce - perhaps that would have fared better. [3/5]
Verdict - the food was quite interesting and a nice alternative if you ever got tired to traditional Korean food. As the prices are reasonable, I think School Food is worth a try if there are no lines.
