[Hong Kong] Flying Pig Bistro - Pig Out in Sai Ying Pun
Along with Kennedy Town, Sai Ying Pun is fast becoming a hub of trendy boutique restaurants and Flying Pig Bistro is my latest conquest in my list of hidden gem restaurants I have already tried in this up and coming neighborhood! From French Creations who is also behind Pastis, Le Boudoir, Comptoir and Metropolitain, Flying Pig Bistro has partnered up with local artist Malcolm Golding for the interior design which gave off an edgy and urban vibe with metallic finishings, broken mirror and graffiti art murals on the walls. Given the name of the restaurant, one would expect a menu solely focused on pork but the diverse menu actually offers beef, lamb, fish and seafood so you can still enjoy the food here if you don't eat pork. Don't get me wrong though - the pork offerings are still the star here which is what I came here to try for lunch!
The Pigs Burger ($155) is one of the signatures here with slow cooked pulled pork, BBQ sauce, melted Swiss Cheese, coleslaw and fries. The pulled pork was soft and flavorful, and the secret was in the BBQ sauce which had Jack Daniels in it!
The Pork Knuckle ($245) with Dutch mashed potato, sauerkraut and pancetta came highly recommended and it definitely didn't disappoint with its crispy skin and extra tender meat! The big portion is meant to be shared so bring your friends when you want to try this.
Even though I was stuffed, I still had to try desserts and the Eton Mess ($78) with crisp white meringue, whipped cream and fresh strawberries turned out to be an excellent choice after our hearty meal as it was light and tart to eat!
Verdict - with big portions and reasonable prices, the Flying Pig Bistro is a great place in Sai Ying Pun for you to dig in and pig out while catching up on some people watching!
