[Tokyo] Sushi Ryusuke 鮨 竜介

Rating: ❤❤❤❤

After my disastrous dinner at Harutaka, I was glad to have a redeeming sushi lunch at Sushi Ryusuke the next day. It was introduced to me by a friend who's also the founder of TABLEALL - an online concierge service that helps visitors book tables at some of the most sought-after restaurants in Japan. Those who travel to Japan know that making reservations is no easy task for foreigners so it's certainly helpful to have an insider assist you. The restaurant was hard to find at first as it was tucked away in a basement, and as you enter you will find yourself at an intimate counter for 7 in front of the friendly Chef Yamane. Chef Yamame has worked at Ginza Kyubey previously which is a bit of sushi institution in Tokyo where former graduates have gone on to open highly successful restaurants including Sushi Saito.

Lunch is a great deal at Sushi Ryusuke which starts from ¥5000, and I definitely enjoyed the flavors here a lot more than Harutaka as it was more balanced - the chef alternates between white or red shari (rice) depending on the neta (fish). While it lacked a certain wow factor piece like the ikura at Sawada or the ankimo with watermelon pickle at Sushi Sho, the food in general was very solid and a fantastic value for money. One thing to note is that the chef forbids the use of camera unless it doesn't make any noise which is why all the pictures here were taken with my iPhone instead of my Canon DSLR.
